Pediatric Osteopathy

As with adults we take a full case history, which may include asking questions about pregnancy and birth related matters before a thorough examination appropriate to the age of the child.  We request that children dress down to their underwear for examination.

Meditating with Baby

Babies

Osteopathic treatment of babies is gentler than adults, using techniques such as cranial osteopathy.  The osteopath is seeking to re-balance the baby's tensions by working on the whole body (skull, spine, abdomen, pelvis, lower and upper limbs.) including jaw, neck and mouth.  The aim of treatment is supporting your child thrive and develop.

Typical baby presentations that the osteopath may see and support include:

  • Concerns due to the birth process ie long, very quick, traumatic due to forceps, ventouse, or emergency caesarian

  • Feeding issues both breastfeeding and bottle feeding

  • Digestive issues including reflux, colic, wind, constipation

  • Head shape changes

Teens

Teenagers may present with a range of issues ranging from sports injuries, pain due to poor posture (gaming, mobile phones, studying), seeking help with the physical and mental challenges of being a teen, and the inability to relax caused by the stress of exams or the pressures of social media.

Treatment for this age group usually includes hands on massage and articulation, stretches or exercises to self support and at home advice to consider.

Osteopaths are trained to screen for medical conditions and will let you know if you need to see another health professional such as your doctor, midwife, 111 or A&E

All under 16s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  We take into account the specific needs and consent of the child during the appointment.
